TEACHERS: This site should be used between the fall speculative writing sample and the spring speculative writing sample. It is NOT meant to be timed.

Objective: Given a picture, students will reflectively think about what is happening in the scene and write a story that scores at least a 4 on the New Jersey Registered Holistic Scoring Rubric.

Materials: Each student will need:

  • Access to a computer, MicroSoft Word and/or PowerPoint, the Internet, and a printer
  • A picture of the teacher's choice or from the picture page of this program
  • Cornell note paper
  • Pen or Pencil
  • A large block of time to work through a computer program (allow four to five eighty-minute periods for students to adequately learn something from using this site from beginning to end OR visit this site in chunks, beginning with a picture and prewrite)
  • Willingness to improve story-writing skills

Procedures: 1. Students will log onto the Computer and the Internet, typing in the web address for this site. 2. Students will follow the site instructions and those of the teacher to create a process-writing piece or pieces until they score at least a 4 on the New Jersey Registered Holistic Scoring Rubric [as determined by the teacher (s)]. 3. Students will publish their work as their teacher sees fit.

Assessment: (Suggested) 1. Teacher will issue a subjective class participation grade based on following directions, staying focused, and/or improving story-writing skills as demonstrated by behavior in the computer lab and by the printed output of the prewriting, rough draft, and final copy. 2.
